The bride wore cowboy boots

I shot a wedding Saturday.  The bride happened to be my niece and the bride also happened to wear cowboy boots.  Neither of these facts are particularly newsworthy but it did start me thinking about tradition, non-traditional thinking, being who you are, and not being who you aren't.

The satirical newspaper and website "The Onion" recently posted a piece mocking just how far some crazy brides and grooms will descend in an effort to have a "non-traditional" wedding.  I won't post the link due to the objectionable language they use, but if you want to look it up on your own, I won't stop you.  Apparently crazy isn't just for California anymore.

On Saturday, the bride and all the bridesmaids, along with the maid of honor all sported similar equestrian footwear.  Lots of laughs ensued along with requests for pictures of the wedding party's feet and other non-standard poses.  Instead of being a strange grab at attention though, in this case, it really worked.  You have to know all the players, but suffice it to say that everybody involved would be way more comfortable on a John Deere than a Mercedes Benz.  The bride and groom have both shoveled their share of manure and handled livestock from beef to poultry.  With this couple it would have seemed forced, stiff and just wrong to try to "shoehorn" their lifestyle into a Jimmy Choo leopard skin pump with a 4" heel.  This group is a lot more Justin Boots than Justin Thornton.

At the end of the day, wouldn't you rather start your life together the way you want it to be for the next 50 years?  The young couple, in love, starting a life together, with eyes for nothing else but each other.  Please excuse me for a moment while I envy them.

They will undoubtedly have an argument or two along their journey.  Although sometimes it may seem like it, marriage is not all fun and games.

There should never be any doubt though, about who will wear the jeans in this family, or the boots, or the Carhartt jackets...they both will.
